Travel: Puerto Princesa ~ Paradise Regained

The Royal Treatment at Puerto Princesa

With safety protocols firmly enforced, Puerto Princesa is poised to again welcome tourists with open arms. In recent years, the highly urbanized city and tourist haven has been paralyzed by the Covid-19 pandemic, then pummeled by Typhoon Odette. But it is now on the road to recovery—as spectacularly as its scenic, romantic and gastronomic attractions.

“The tourism industry is the lifeblood of Puerto Princesa, along with agriculture. Almost 15,000 people directly or indirectly benefit from tourism. In varying degrees, most of the recent construction and development projects are related to tourism: hotel-building, parks, cruise-ship ports, street lights, roads and many more. Unfortunately, some of these have been on hold since the onset of the pandemic,” discloses Demetrio “Toto” Alvior Jr., the city tourism officer.

Tubbataha Reef, Palawan

I have been wanting a Tubbataha Reef postcard for my collection and a couple to swap with friends and fellow enthusiasts. Unfortunately, I was not able to stumble upon a bunch of these postcards in any of the bookstores I frequent. Luckily, one of my fellow Postcrossing Philippines members had a card to spare and agreed to swap with me.

According to Wikipedia, the Tubbataha Reef is an atoll coral reef and a National Marine Park located in Sulu Sea. The reefs are considered part of the island municipality of Cagayancillo, Palawan. It is a marine sanctuary protected as Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. It was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1993 and was also nominated for the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The reef got its name from two Samal words: tubba and taha, which means “a long reef exposed at low tide,” when put together.

Thank you so much Roselyn for sending me this lovely card and for the copy of the signatures of those who joined our meet-up last month, which I was not able to join! It was such a clever idea and I love it! It made me want to play one of those exceptional Rico Instruments at musician’s friend even if I do not know how to play! ^_^

Puerto Princesa Underground River, Palawan, Philippines, new 7 wonders of nature

Looks like everyone’s hard work to vote + campaign for the Puerto Princesa Underground River has paid off. Palawan’s pride is included in the recently announced provisional New 7 Wonders of Nature. The list is still subject to change, though, but let us hope that our country’s bet will be one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature during its announcement + inauguration early next year.

Magnificent wonders of nature that made it to the tentative list include: The Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo + Table Mountain.

Check out the details of announcement here.
