Schedule of Events For The Fiesta Republica 2015!

January will be a very festive month in our city as we commemorate the formation of the Philippine’s First Republic on the 23rd. In line with this momentous occasion, the local city Government, led by our very dynamic City Mayor, lined-up a series of activities for everyone to partake in.

There will be a Short Film Festival to be held at local Cinemas joined in by local amateur film makers, a bike festival, a tricycle fest, several talent shows and contests joined in by musically-gifted Malolenos, as well as an assortment of other activities. The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra will also perform during the festival. One of the high, lights of the festivities is the reenactment of the activities that took place during the declaration of the very first Philippine Republic, when people from different parts of Luzon will come to Malolos to play brass band music on the streets in front of the Barasoain Church. We were able to watch the brass band competition about 2 years ago, where my brother’s band from Malolos won grand prize. The contest was judged by no less than Olivier Ochanine, Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra {PPO}. You may read about our experience here.

The activities will be held in different venues in our city, including the Barasoain Church Plaza, the Malolos Sports and Convention Center, among others.

If you are from Malolos or residing anywhere near, this month is the most ideal time to visit our little charming city and participate in the many fun, educational, and relevant activities our city lined up to commemorate the First Philippine Republic.

If traveling to Malolos for the first time, proceed to NLEX and take Tabang Exit. The city proper is about 15-20 minutes away from the Exit. Explore your way around by asking a local directions or proceed to the local Tourism Office. When commuting, you can ride one of those UV Express vans in Trinoma. Its terminal is at Malolos Crossing, where everything else is just a Karatig ride away.

Bulacan plays host to this year’s Dayaw Festival, a grand celebration + gathering of indigenous Filipino cultures arranged by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. This is in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples’ Month, with this year’s theme, Katutubong Pamumuhay, Halawan ng Aral sa Buhay.

A bevy of activities are lined-up for this 3-day festivities, starting today, 27 November, spear-headed by the opening ceremonies at the Provincial Capitol in Malolos City, helmed by no less than Gov. Willy Alvarado + NCAA chairman Felipe M. De Leon Jr. Included in today’s schedule of events are:

  • Opening program at 8.30am
  • Opening of the Tyange area at 8.40am
  • Mga Pagtatanghal ng Katutubo {every 30 minutes} from 9am-5pm
  • Opening of Dayaw Village at 9.40am
  • Opening of DAyaw Exhibit at 9.50am
  • Lakbay-sining, which will be simultaneously held in Pulilan, Plaridel + Balagtas at 11.20am

the zamboanga la hermosa festival

If there is another festival I would like to be in this October, it has to be the Hermosa Festival in Zamboanga, which is more popularly known as Fiesta Pilar, in honor of the miraculous Our Lady of the Pillar {her own fiesta is held every October 12}. This month-long festivities which include {from Wiki}:

  • street dance competition
  • Wow Zamboanga which showcases tastes + talents of different barangays
  • talent search + beauty pageants
  • Cosechas de Zamboanga
  • sports fest
  • agriculture trade fairs
  • musical shows + concerts
  • Regatta de Zamboanga where the colorful vintas of the province race
I have never been to Zamboanga + have never seen a vinta in my life, I am sure it will be a very worthwhile experience if I do.

masskara festival in bacolod

If there is one festival I would love to join, it would have to be the Masskara Festival, which is held in Bacolod {also know as the City of Smiles} every October 1-19 of each year. I would love to participate in the colorful festivities + just shrug my worries + cares away in the midst of all the jovial celebration. Not only that, I would also want to sample the local delicacies, especially Napoleones, pinasugbu + piaya. Back when I used to work, I have a number of friends who live in Bacolod + whenever they come back for vacation, they never forget to bring some goodies back for us to feast on. I am missing that so much!

This 31-year old festival was originally started to bring cheer to the otherwise gloomy sugar industry which is the only source of income for the Negrenses back then. The tragic sinking of passenger vessel Don Juan, where 700 Negreses perished, aggravated this further.

Masskara, which literaly translates to “a mass or multitude of smiling faces,” is a fusion of two words, mass which means many or multitude + kara, which is the Spanish term for face.

A host of exciting activities are scheduled in line with the festival, including a beauty pageant, a golf tournament, concerts, fireworks display + a streetdance competition. Plus the Masskara Village was unveiled this year.

Some of the warmest + kindest people I know hails from Bacolod + am sure it will be such a treat to visit their place if only to join in all of the festivities + be surrounded by these beautiful people!
